I'm not a chemist, but I will try to share my own
humble understanding. Polymer Clay is not really a
clay in it does not come from the earth. It has
properties and is worked similar to clay. It is a man
made material. It is non-toxic. It comes in various
colors and quality. It is a medium that doesn't
discriminate. It can be used by children, crafters,
and fine artists. It comes in little bricks or large that
must first be conditioned so that it is soft enough to
work with. There are many ways to do this such as
using your hands, a rolling pin, a clay dedicated
food processor, or a clay dedicated pasta machine.
The clay can then be sculpted, molded, decorated,
and manipulated in a mind blowing number of
ways. It doesn't dry out and can be cured in a
regular old oven at around 275 degrees. At this
point it is hard, yet flat pieces will have a slight give.
It is durable but don't try to bend it in half. It can
now be sanded, buffed, antiqued, painted, sealed, or
left alone. It is fascinating and addicting. If you are
interested in learning more check out the links
section, but be forewarned it can take over a whole
dinning room in an afternoon!
Happy Claying,
